- Order: Hemiptera, Family: Pseudococcidae
- Size
- 1 to 4 millimeters in length.
Natural Habitat
Warm, moist environments; commonly found on the undersides of plant leaves, stems, and in crevices of houseplants and crops.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous; they use piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap (phloem), often excreting a sticky substance called honeydew.
Behavior Patterns
Slow-moving insects that cover themselves in a white, waxy, cottony secretion for protection. They often aggregate in clusters on host plants.
Risks & Benefits
Significant agricultural and horticultural pests. They can cause leaf yellowing, stunted growth, and death of plants, and their honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. They offer no known benefits to humans.
