Natural Habitat

Indoor environments, particularly in dark, undisturbed areas such as under furniture, in carpets, closets, and storage boxes. They are found worldwide.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on keratin-based animal products including wool, fur, silk, leather, feathers, and dead insects. They will also eat dried plant products and synthetic fabrics if they are soiled with food or sweat.

Behavior Patterns

The larva is the destructive stage. They avoid light and move slowly, often found burrowing into fabrics. When disturbed, they may roll up or freeze. They molt several times, leaving behind empty brown skins.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Major household pest that damages carpets, clothing, and natural fibers. Their bristles (hastisetae) can cause allergic reactions or dermatitis (carpet beetle dermatitis) in some people. Benefits: In nature, they act as decomposers of animal matter.
