Nocturnal and elusive; they hide during the day and are attracted to the carbon dioxide and warmth of a host. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis with five nymphal stages.

Risks include itchy allergic reactions to bites, sleep deprivation, and psychological distress. While they do not transmit diseases, they are considered a significant public health pest. There are no ecological benefits in human domestic environments.
