Natural Habitat
Bird nests, coops, aviaries, and can infest homes when bird hosts are removed or nearby. They prefer warm, dark environments.
Diet & Feeding
Blood of birds (ornamental birds, poultry, wild birds). They are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal feeders, they hide in cracks and crevices during the day. Can survive for extended periods (several months) without a blood meal. They rapidly reproduce, leading to large infestations.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause anemia, stress, decreased egg production, and even death in birds. They can bite humans, causing itchy welts, but cannot complete their life cycle on human blood. Can be difficult to eradicate from homes once established. No known benefits.
