Natural Habitat
Found in woodlands, thickets, and vineyards across central and eastern North America.
Diet & Feeding
Adults feed on the leaves and fruit of wild and cultivated grapes. Larvae live in soil or rotting wood and consume decaying organic matter.
Behavior Patterns
Active primarily at night (nocturnal) and are strongly attracted to porch lights. They have a clumsy flight and produce a loud buzzing sound. They typically live for one to two years, spending most of that time as underground larvae.
Risks & Benefits
Generally considered a minor pest as they rarely cause significant damage to commercial crops. They are harmless to humans and serve a role in the ecosystem by recycling nutrients through decaying wood decomposition.
