Obligate hematophages; adults feed exclusively on the blood of mammals and birds.

Flightless but excellent jumpers; they undergo a complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult) and are active year-round indoors.

Risks include painful bites, allergic dermatitis, and transmission of pathogens like tapeworms or plague; they offer no significant benefits to ecosystems.
