Natural Habitat

Primarily human dwellings, especially in beds, mattresses, bed frames, and cracks/crevices near sleeping areas. They can also be found in furniture, walls, and luggage.

Diet & Feeding

Exclusively hematophagous, feeding on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans. They typically feed at night while hosts are sleeping.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal; they hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. They are attracted to carbon dioxide and body heat. Bed bugs are wingless and move by crawling. Infestations can spread quickly through travel and used furniture.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include itchy bites which can cause skin irritation, secondary infections from scratching, allergic reactions in some individuals, and significant emotional distress. While they are not known to transmit diseases, their presence is a nuisance and can be difficult to eradicate. There are no known benefits to humans or the ecosystem.
