Natural Habitat

Found in lawns, gardens, and grassy fields; they are common in residential areas across North America.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on the leaves of various trees and shrubs at night; larvae (grubs) live underground and eat the roots of grasses and ornamentals.

Behavior Patterns

They are nocturnal and strongly attracted to artificial light sources. They are clumsy flyers and have a 1-3 year life cycle spent mostly as subterranean larvae.

Risks & Benefits

They pose no direct risk to humans as they do not bite or sting. However, the larvae can be significant pests to lawns and crops, while the adults provide a food source for birds, skunks, and other wildlife.
