Nocturnal feeders that hide during the day; they undergo five nymphal stages (instars) and require a blood meal to molt at each stage.

Potential risk of itchy, red welts from bites and allergic reactions; can cause significant psychological distress and sleep loss; they are not known vectors of infectious diseases.
