Natural Habitat
Commonly found indoors in kitchens, pantries, and storage areas, as well as outdoors in bird/mammal nests or near animal remains.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on high-protein animal products including dried meats, cheese, pet food, feathers, hair, dead insects, and animal hides.
Behavior Patterns
Adults are active in spring and summer; they often enter homes to find food or places to overwinter. Larvae are known to bore into hard materials like wood or insulation to pupate.
Risks & Benefits
Considered a significant household pest as they can contaminate and destroy stored food products and natural fibers. They do not bite or sting humans, but their larval hairs can cause skin irritation in some individuals.
