Drain Fly Larva
Scientific Name: Psychodidae (family)
Order & Family: Order: Diptera, Family: Psychodidae
Size: 3mm to 10mm in length

Natural Habitat
Damp, organic-rich environments such as sink drains, sewage pipes, septic tanks, and wet compost.
Diet & Feeding
Decomposing organic matter, algae, bacteria, and fungi (biofilm) found in plumbing and sewers.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae live within the gelatinous film layer of drains and emerge as small, fuzzy gnats. They are typically nocturnal and have breathing tubes at the end of their bodies to breathe while submerged in slime.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans and don't bite, but high populations can indicate plumbing issues. Their presence helps break down organic sludge in drains, though they can potentially transport bacteria from sewers to kitchen surfaces.
