Diet & Feeding
Carnivorous; feeds primarily on aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and other small soft-bodied insects. They are known as 'aphid lions'.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae carry a 'trash packet' on their backs (made of carcass remains and plant debris) for camouflage from predators and to sneak up on prey. They move with an erratic, swaying motion.
Risks & Benefits
Extremely beneficial to ecosystems and gardens as natural pest control. While harmless to humans, they may occasionally provide a tiny, non-venomous 'pinch' or bite if handled.
