Natural Habitat

Gardens, agricultural fields, forests, and residential backyards worldwide.

Diet & Feeding

Carnivorous; feeds primarily on aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and other small soft-bodied insects. They are known as 'aphid lions'.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae carry a 'trash packet' on their backs (made of carcass remains and plant debris) for camouflage from predators and to sneak up on prey. They move with an erratic, swaying motion.

Risks & Benefits

Extremely beneficial to ecosystems and gardens as natural pest control. While harmless to humans, they may occasionally provide a tiny, non-venomous 'pinch' or bite if handled.
