Fungus Gnat Larva
Scientific Name: Sciaridae (family)
Order & Family: Diptera: Sciaridae
Size: Typically about 1/4 inch (6 mm) long when fully grown.

Natural Habitat
Found in damp, organic rich environments, commonly in potted plant soil, greenhouses, and areas with high humidity where fungi grow. They thrive in overwatered soil.
Diet & Feeding
They feed on fungi, algae, decaying organic matter, and plant roots found in soil. They are particularly attracted to peat moss and compost.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae are legless and worm-like with distinct black heads and translucent bodies. They live in the top layers of soil and leave slime trails similar to slugs. Adults are weak fliers often seen running across soil surfaces.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans (they do not bite), but they can be a significant pest for houseplants. Their feeding can damage root hairs of young plants, causing stunted growth or wilting. In rare cases, they can spread plant pathogens.
