Size: 4 to 5 mm (adults), roughly the size of an apple seed.

Natural Habitat

Nests in cracks, crevices, furniture, and mattresses in domestic dwellings; usually found within close proximity to human sleeping areas.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophagous (blood-feeding); primarily feeds on human blood but may feed on other warm-blooded animals if humans are unavailable.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal, cryptic, and photophobic. They hide during the day and use heat and carbon dioxide to locate hosts at night. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis (nymph to adult).

Risks & Benefits

Risk: Causes itchy, red welts and potential allergic reactions; can cause psychological distress and insomnia. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans. Benefit: None to humans or the ecosystem; considered a significant domestic pest.
