- Nits are approximately 0.8 mm long; adults are 2.1-3.3 mm (roughly the size of a sesame seed).
Natural Habitat
Human scalp and hair, most commonly found behind the ears and near the neckline.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate ectoparasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.
Behavior Patterns
Nits are glued firmly to hair shafts near the scalp. They hatch in 8-9 days. Lice cannot fly, jump, or swim; they spread through direct head-to-head contact.
Risks & Benefits
Causes intense itching (pediculosis) and potential secondary skin infections from scratching. They do not transmit diseases, unlike body lice. No ecosystem benefits.
