Mold Mite (or Grain Mite)
Tyrophagus putrescentiae
- Order & Family
- Order: Sarcoptiformes, Family: Acaridae
- Size
- 0.3–0.45 mm (nearly microscopic, appearing as tiny white moving specks)
Natural Habitat
High-humidity environments, organic matter, stored products, and areas with mold or fungal growth.
Diet & Feeding
Primarily fungi, mold, and yeast; also feeds on high-protein or high-fat stored foods like seeds, grains, and cheese.
Behavior Patterns
Rapid reproduction in humid conditions; they move slowly but can appear in huge numbers (mite dust). They can enter a dormant 'hypopus' stage to survive adverse conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Generally harmless to humans but can cause 'grocer's itch' (allergic dermatitis) or respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals. They are considered pests of stored products and indicators of high moisture/mold issues in a home.
