Indian meal moth (larva)
Plodia interpunctella
- Order & Family
- Order Lepidoptera, Family Pyralidae
- Size
- Mature larvae are approximately 12 mm (0.5 inches) long; adults have a wingspan of 16-20 mm.
Natural Habitat
They are globally distributed pantry pests found in homes, grocery stores, food processing plants, and grain silos.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on a wide range of dry stored food products including flour, cereal, pasta, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, chocolate, and pet food.
Behavior Patterns
The larvae spin characteristic silken webbing over the surface of the food they infest. They often crawl away from their food source to pupate in cracks, crevices, or the corners of pantry shelves.
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite or sting and pose no direct health risk to humans or pets; however, they are major economic pests that cause significant food spoilage and waste through contamination with webbing, frass (waste), and cast skins.
