Natural Habitat

Coniferous forests and woodlands; often found around homes and buildings in autumn as they seek overwintering sites.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on the developing seeds and cones of several species of conifers, including Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, and lodgepole pine, using its piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Behavior Patterns

They are active fliers and produce a distinct buzzing sound. They enter diapause during winter and are known for congregating on the sunny sides of buildings or finding their way indoors for warmth.
