Varied Carpet Beetle (Larva)

Natural Habitat

Commonly found indoors in carpets, closets, vents, and under furniture; outdoors found in bird nests or bee hives.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, debris, and dead insects; adults feed on pollen and nectar.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae are photophobic (avoid light) and seek out dark, undisturbed areas to feed. They are slow-moving and hairy (bristly). Adults are attracted to light and are often found near windows.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans (they do not bite), but the larvae are a significant household pest that can damage clothing, carpets, and upholstery. Some people may develop a skin rash (dermatitis) from contact with larval hairs.
