Natural Habitat
Found in the digestive tracts of pets (dogs and cats); passed segments appear on fur, bedding, or in stool.
Diet & Feeding
Absorbs nutrients directly from the host's intestinal contents.
Behavior Patterns
These segments break off from the main worm in the intestine and crawl out of the anus. Once dry, they resemble sesame seeds and release eggs that are then ingested by fleas.
Risks & Benefits
Poses health risks to pets including weight loss and irritation. Humans (especially children) can be infected if they accidentally ingest an infected flea. No ecological benefits; considered a parasite.
