Natural Habitat

Damp environments high in organic matter, such as bathroom drains, sewer pipes, septic tanks, and kitchen sinks.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on the organic 'slime' (biofilm) that accumulates in drains; adults primarily feed on liquid carbohydrates like nectar or polluted water.

Behavior Patterns

Poor fliers that often crawl or take short, jerky flights; they are mostly nocturnal and are frequently found resting on walls near drains. Their life cycle is rapid, often completing in 1 to 3 weeks.

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans but are considered a nuisance pest. Their presence often indicates a clog or a buildup of organic material in the plumbing system.
