Natural Habitat
Found exclusively on the human scalp, attaching eggs (nits) to hair shafts close to the scalp surface.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate ectoparasites that feed exclusively on human blood several times a day.
Behavior Patterns
They cannot fly or jump; they spread through direct head-to-head contact. Nits take about 7-10 days to hatch and are glued to the hair with a waterproof substance.
Risks & Benefits
Cause intense itching (pruritus) and scalp irritation. They do not transmit diseases, but scratching can lead to secondary bacterial skin infections.
