Gardens, nurseries, greenhouses, leaf litter, and occasionally indoors after accidental entry

Adults feed on plant leaves, creating characteristic notched edges. Larvae feed underground on plant roots, particularly yew, rhododendron, strawberry, and various ornamental plants.

Flightless, nocturnal, and slow-moving. Adults hide in dark, damp sheltered spots during the day (such as under pots, leaf litter, or indoors on fabrics) and emerge at night to feed. Reproduction is primarily parthenogenetic (females lay unfertilized eggs).

Harmless to humans and pets (does not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, nor infest house structures). However, it is a significant agricultural and horticultural pest; larval root feeding can severely weaken or kill potted plants and garden shrubs.
