Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, primarily in cracks and crevices near human sleeping areas, such as mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and behind wallpaper or baseboards.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophages, meaning they feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans.
Behavior Patterns
They are nocturnal, emerging at night to feed. They go through five nymphal stages, requiring a blood meal between each molt. They are known for 'hitchhiking' on luggage and clothing to spread to new locations.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include itchy skin welts, allergic reactions, and potential psychological distress or insomnia. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans. There are no known ecological benefits to their presence in human dwellings; they are considered a significant domestic pest.
