Natural Habitat

Damp areas with organic matter such as sink drains, sewers, septic tanks, and moist compost

Diet & Feeding

Larvae feed on decomposing organic matter, mucus, and algae (biofilm) within drains; adults primarily consume liquids and flower nectar

Behavior Patterns

Poor fliers that often crawl on surfaces; they are most active at night and are attracted to light. Their life cycle from egg to adult takes about 1-3 weeks depending on temperature.

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans through stings; however, they can mechanically transfer bacteria from sewage to food surfaces. They benefit the ecosystem by breaking down organic sludge in pipes.
