Natural Habitat

Damp, dark, and cool environments such as basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and attics. Often found under sinks, in boxes, or behind wallpaper.

Diet & Feeding

Strictly carbohydrate-based materials including starches and dextrin. They eat book bindings, paper, photos, sugar, hair, dandruff, and certain synthetic fabrics.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and extremely fast runners. They move with a shimmering, fish-like motion. They have a long lifespan (up to 8 years) and undergo ametabolous metamorphosis (nymphs look like small adults).

Risks & Benefits

They do not bite humans or transmit disease, but are considered household pests. Risks include damage to property (books, clothing, wallpaper). They are a food source for spiders and centipedes.
