Case-bearing Clothes Moth (larva)

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dark, quiet areas like closets, under furniture, or in carpets. Specifically attracted to natural fibers like wool, fur, silk, and feathers.

Diet & Feeding

The larvae feed on keratin-rich materials, including wool, hair, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and sometimes stored foods or dust.

Behavior Patterns

The most distinctive behavior is that the larva carries a silken case around with it as it moves and feeds, which blends in with the material it is eating (camouflaging it like a piece of lint or debris). It enlarges the case as it grows and eventually pupates inside it.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: Major household pest; the larvae cause damage to clothing, carpets, upholstery, and stored natural fabrics by chewing holes in them. Benefits: In nature, they help decompose animal matter (feathers, fur), but inside homes, they are solely destructive.
