Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dark, quiet areas such as closets, carpet edges, under furniture, pantries, and storage boxes where natural fibers are present.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on keratin-rich materials, including wool, fur, silk, felt, feathers, hair, and lint. They may also eat plant-based materials like stored grain or spices.

Behavior Patterns

The larva constructs a silken sanctuary or 'case' around its body, which it camouflages with particles of the fiber it is eating and dust. It carries this case around with it as it moves and feeds, eventually pupating inside the same casing.

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered a household pest. They pose a risk to property by chewing irregular holes in clothing, carpets, and upholstery made of natural fibers. They do not bite or sting humans and carry no known diseases.
