Natural Habitat
Native to China, India, and Vietnam; currently an invasive species in the Northeastern United States, typically found on host plants like the Tree of Heaven, grapevines, and fruit trees.
Diet & Feeding
Planthopper that feeds on plant sap from over 70 species of plants, including fruit trees, hops, and hardwoods.
Behavior Patterns
Nymphs and adults feed in large groups. They lay egg masses in late fall on surfaces such as trees, stones, and outdoor furniture. They are strong jumpers and fly short distances.
Risks & Benefits
Highly invasive and destructive to agriculture, specifically vineyards and orchards. They excrete 'honeydew', which promotes the growth of black sooty mold that can kill plants.
