Natural Habitat

Found primarily on birch trees (Betula species), but can also be found on alders and rhododendrons in gardens, woodlands, and parks.

Diet & Feeding

Seed feeder that primarily consumes the seeds/catkins of birch and alder trees; they are also known to feed on the sap of these plants.

Behavior Patterns

They overwinter as adults in leaf litter or under bark and emerge in spring to mate. They are often noted for producing a fragrant or pungent scent when disturbed and can form large aggregations.

Risks & Benefits

They pose no risk to humans or pets. While they can sometimes enter houses in large numbers during autumn looking for overwintering sites, they do not cause structural damage or bite.
