Natural Habitat
The human scalp, primarily living and laying eggs (nits) near the hair shafts.
Diet & Feeding
Strictly hematophagous; they feed on human blood multiple times a day.
Behavior Patterns
They are wingless and cannot jump or fly; they move by crawling from person to person through direct head-to-head contact. They are obligate parasites that die within 24-48 hours if removed from a human host.
Risks & Benefits
While they do not spread disease, they cause intense itching (pruritus) due to an allergic reaction to their saliva. Secondary bacterial infections can occur from scratching. They provide no known ecological benefits to humans.
