Tribolium castaneum
- Order & Family
- Order: Coleoptera, Family: Tenebrionidae
- Size
- Typically 3-4 mm (1/8 - 1/6 inch) in length.
Natural Habitat
Commonly found in pantries, food processing plants, flour mills, and anywhere dry stored food products are present. They thrive in warm, humid environments.
Diet & Feeding
The Red Flour Beetle is a scavenger that feeds on a wide range of stored products, including flour, cereals, pasta, biscuits, dried fruits, nuts, spices, and pet food. They prefer milled grain products over whole grains.
Behavior Patterns
Flour beetles are often found in stored food products and are known to be highly resilient. They can live for several months and reproduce rapidly if conditions are favorable. They are active within dark, undisturbed areas of food commodities and can infest a variety of grains and processed foods. When disturbed, they may play dead or quickly scurry away.
Risks & Benefits
Potential risks include significant damage and contamination of stored food products, making them unfit for consumption. Infested food may develop a grayish tint or moldy appearance, and high infestations can impart a pungent odor or taste. They do not bite or sting and are not known to transmit diseases to humans. There are no direct benefits to humans, as they are considered pests.
