Pine Needle Scale
Scientific Name: Chionaspis pinifoliae
Order & Family: Hemiptera: Diaspididae
Size: Approximately 2 to 3 mm in length (females)

Natural Habitat
Typically found on the needles of various pine species, spruce, fir, and Douglas-fir across North America.
Diet & Feeding
Plant juices; they utilize piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the sap from coniferous tree needles.
Behavior Patterns
The light-colored specks on the needles are the waxy armored shells of the female insects. They remain stationary under these covers once settled. In spring, crawlers (the mobile juvenile stage) emerge from under the mother's shell to find new feeding spots.
Risks & Benefits
They are a significant horticultural pest. Heavy infestations can cause needle yellowing, premature needle drop, and overall reduction in tree vigor or death in young trees. They do not pose a direct risk to humans.
