Natural Habitat

Human dwellings, primarily in sleeping areas such as mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and behind baseboards or wallpaper.

Diet & Feeding

Obligate hematophages; they feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals, primarily humans.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal parasites that hide in cracks and crevices during the day. The dark spotting shown is fecal spotting (digested blood), which they deposit near their harborage areas.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include itchy bites, allergic reactions, secondary skin infections from scratching, and significant psychological distress/insomnia. They are not known to transmit diseases to humans. There are no ecological benefits to their presence in human homes.
