Bed Bug (Exoskeleton/Shell Fragment)
Cimex lectularius
- Order & Family
- Order: Hemiptera, Family: Cimicidae
- Size
- Adults are 4-5 mm; nymphs range from 1.5-4.5 mm. Fragments like the one shown are often smaller pieces of a shed skin.
Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, specifically near human sleeping or resting areas such as mattress seams, bed frames, cracks, and crevices.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate hematophages, meaning they feed exclusively on animal blood, primarily from humans, though they may bite other mammals and birds.
Behavior Patterns
They are nocturnal, elusive pests that hide during the day and emerge at night to feed. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis, shedding their exoskeleton (molting) five times before reaching maturity.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include itchy allergic reactions to bites, sleep deprivation, and psychological distress. While not known to transmit diseases, heavy infestations can cause anemia. There are no ecological benefits to their presence in human dwellings.
