Bird mite
Ornithonyssus sylviarum
- Order & Family
- Order: Mesostigmata, Family: Macronyssidae
- Size
- 0.5 mm to 1 mm in length
Natural Habitat
Found in bird nests and occasionally in human homes, particularly near windows, vents, or eaves where birds nest.
Diet & Feeding
Obligate blood-feeders, primarily feeding on the blood of various wild and domestic bird species.
Behavior Patterns
They are semi-permanent parasites that spend most of their life cycle on or near their hosts. When their primary host (a bird) leaves the nest, mites may wander into human living spaces seeking a new host.
Risks & Benefits
They can bite humans, causing intense itching and skin irritation (dermatitis). They do not reproduce on human blood and cannot thrive long-term without their bird hosts.
