Fruit fly

Scientific Name: Drosophila melanogaster

Order & Family: Order: Diptera; Family: Drosophilidae

Size: 3 to 4 millimeters (about 1/8 inch) in length

Fruit fly

Natural Habitat

Commonly found in homes, restaurants, grocery stores, and anywhere else where rotting fruit or moist organic matter is present.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae and adults feed on the microorganisms (yeast) and sugars found in overripe or decaying fruit and vegetables, as well as fermenting liquids.

Behavior Patterns

They are highly attracted to the smell of fermentation. They have an extremely short life cycle, maturing from egg to adult in about 8-10 days, allowing populations to grow rapidly in favorable conditions.

Risks & Benefits

They are considered a nuisance pest and can potentially contaminate food with bacteria and pathogens collected from their feeding environments. However, they are invaluable to science as a primary model organism in genetics and developmental biology research.
