Behavior Patterns
The long 'tail' is actually a breathing tube (syphon) that allows the larva to breathe atmospheric air while submerged. They undergo complete metamorphosis to become adult hoverflies.

Benefits: Adults are important pollinators. Risks: If accidentally ingested through contaminated water, they can cause accidental intestinal myiasis in humans.
