Natural Habitat

Damp, dark, and secluded areas such as bathrooms, basements, attics, kitchens, and sometimes in books, papers, or clothing. They prefer areas with high humidity (75% to 95% relative humidity).

Diet & Feeding

They are omnivorous and scavengers, feeding on polysaccharides found in carbohydrates such as starch and dextrin. Their diet includes glue in books and wallpaper, carpet, clothing, sugar, hair, dandruff, and sometimes dead insects.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and reclusive, silverfish are known for their fast, wiggling, fish-like movements when disturbed. They are long-lived for an insect, with a lifespan of 2-8 years. They undergo ametabolous metamorphosis, meaning they hatch from eggs as nymphs that look like miniature adults and continue to molt throughout their lives, even as adults.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include damage to household items such as books, papers, wallpaper, clothing, and food products containing starches. They do not bite, spread disease, or pose a direct health risk to humans. There are no known significant benefits, though they can be part of the detritus food chain.
