Natural Habitat
Found in stored food products such as grains, cereals, dried fruits, flour, pasta, and pet food. Commonly infests pantries and food processing facilities.
Diet & Feeding
Feeds on a wide variety of stored dry food products, especially processed grains that are already damaged or broken. It cannot attack whole, undamaged grains.
Behavior Patterns
These beetles are highly mobile and can quickly spread throughout food storage areas. They are often found in dark, undisturbed places within food packages. Both adults and larvae are damaging. Females lay eggs individually in the food source, and larvae complete their development within the food.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: A major pest of stored food products, causing significant economic losses to food manufacturers and consumers by contaminating food, making it unfit for consumption. Benefits: No known direct benefits to humans or ecosystems, primarily considered a pest.
