Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding

Scavengers that feed on natural fibers and animal products including wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, leather, and dried pet food.

Behavior Patterns

Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas and undergo multiple molts before pupating. They are most active during the larval stage which can last from several months to a year.

Risks & Benefits

Risks include damage to household textiles, clothing, and food stores. Their bristly hairs can also cause skin irritation or allergic reactions (carpet beetle dermatitis) in sensitive individuals. They provide no significant benefits in a domestic environment.
