Natural Habitat
Indoor environments, particularly in carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, closets, and baseboards where organic debris accumulates.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on natural fibers such as wool, silk, fur, feathers, and hair, as well as dried food products and dead insects.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They undergo a complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult). The larval stage is the most destructive and can last for several months.
Risks & Benefits
Risks include significant damage to household textiles and clothing. Some people may experience 'carpet beetle dermatitis,' an allergic reaction to the larval hairs. They provide no significant benefits in a home environment.
