Damp, dark, and cool areas such as basements, bathrooms, kitchens, and attics. They are often found near sources of starch or moisture.

Diet & Feeding

Strictly carbohydrate-based; they feed on starches and polysaccharides found in book bindings, wallpaper paste, paper, carpet, clothing, and starch-based adhesives, as well as dried food crumbs.

Behavior Patterns

Nocturnal and highly agile runners that prefer to hide during the day. They undergo hemimetabolous metamorphosis (gradual change) and are known for their longevity, often living 2 to 8 years.

Risks & Benefits

Generally harmless to humans and pets as they do not bite or transmit diseases. However, they are considered structural pests because they can cause significant damage to books, documents, and textiles. In ecosystems, they act as decomposers.
