Carpet Beetle Larva (Exuviae/Shed Skin)
Anthrenus verbasci (typically)
- Order & Family
- Order: Coleoptera; Family: Dermestidae
- Size
- 1 mm to 5 mm (larval stage)
Natural Habitat
Commonly found in homes, specifically in carpets, upholstery, closets, under furniture, or near baseboards where organic debris accumulates.
Diet & Feeding
Scavengers that feed on natural fibers and animal products including wool, silk, fur, feathers, hair, pet dander, and dried food products.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are avoidant of light and prefer dark, undisturbed areas. They undergo several molts as they grow, leaving behind these hollow, tan, bristly shed skins (exuviae).
Risks & Benefits
They do not bite humans, but the prickly hairs on the larvae can cause 'carpet beetle dermatitis' (allergic skin reactions). They are significant household pests that can damage clothing, carpets, and blankets.
