Natural Habitat
Indoors, especially in undisturbed areas like under furniture, rugs, closets; feed on natural fibers, pet hair, dried food products. Can be found in nests of birds/mammals outdoors.
Diet & Feeding
Keratin-containing materials (wool, silk, fur, feathers), dried animal products, seeds, grains, dried pet food, insect collections.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae are often slow-moving and prefer dark, secluded areas. They feed on organic matter and undergo complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult). The larval stage is the damaging stage. Adults are typically small, oval beetles that may feed on pollen outdoors.
Risks & Benefits
Risks: Can cause significant damage to household items made of natural fibers (carpets, clothing, upholstery). Can contaminate dried food products. Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to their hair or shed skins. Benefits: Very minor role as decomposers in natural environments.
