Varied Carpet Beetle

Natural Habitat

Typically found indoors in dry, dark places like closets, attics, and under rugs. In nature, they are often found in bird nests or bee hives.

Diet & Feeding

Adults feed on pollen and nectar. The larvae (which cause damage) feed on natural fibers like wool, silk, fur, feathers, and dead insects.

Behavior Patterns

Adults are attracted to light and often found on windowsills. The larvae prefer dark, secluded areas where they feed on organic material, often leaving behind shed skins.

Risks & Benefits

Risks: The larvae are a common household pest that damage clothing, carpets, and stored fabrics. Their bristly hairs can cause skin irritation (carpet beetle dermatitis) or allergic reactions in some people. They do not bite or sting.
