Natural Habitat

Diet & Feeding
Obligate blood-feeders on birds (chickens, pigeons, sparrows) and occasionally humans when bird hosts are unavailable.
Behavior Patterns
Mostly active at night, crawling long distances from nesting sites to find a host. They have a rapid life cycle, often maturing in about 7 days under optimal conditions.
Risks & Benefits
Can cause intensely itchy bites and dermatitis in humans. They do not live on humans long-term but are significant pests for poultry and wild birds.
