Natural Habitat

Central and South America; typically found in tropical forest floor leaf litter or humid environments.

Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous and frugivorous; they primarily consume decaying organic matter, fruits, grains, and high-protein vegetable matter.

Behavior Patterns

They are a non-climbing, non-flying species of cockroach. They are relatively slow-moving, ovoviviparous (giving birth to live young), and exhibit photophobic (light-avoiding) tendencies.

Risks & Benefits

Benefits include being an excellent nutrient-dense feeder insect for reptiles and amphibians in captivity. They are not considered a household pest as they require high humidity to breed and do not infest human homes easily. Risks include potential allergic reactions to their frass (waste) in sensitive individuals.
