Dust Mite

Natural Habitat

Found in household dust, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and clothing, preferring warm and humid environments.

Diet & Feeding

Feeds on shed human and animal skin flakes (dander), as well as other organic detritus found in dust.

Behavior Patterns

Microscopic and not visible to the naked eye. Thrive in high humidity and moderate temperatures. They do not bite or burrow into skin. Their populations can explode in suitable environments, leading to significant allergen production.

Risks & Benefits

Potential risks include being a major allergen source for humans, triggering asthma, eczema, and allergic rhinitis symptoms. They do not offer direct benefits to humans or the ecosystem in an indoor setting, and are generally considered pests due to allergic reactions.
