Natural Habitat
Damp, dark, and cool areas of buildings such as basements, attics, kitchens, and bathrooms. Outdoors, they live under bark, rocks, and leaf litter.
Diet & Feeding
Broadly omnivorous and scavenging; they consume carbohydrates and starches like book bindings, carpet fibers, household dust, glue, paper, and keratin from dead insects or human hair.
Behavior Patterns
Nocturnal and extremely fast-moving with a fish-like swimming motion. They undergo hemimetabolous metamorphosis and can live up to 3 to 8 years, which is unusually long for a small insect.
Risks & Benefits
They are considered nuisance pests as they can damage property like books, wallpaper, and clothing. They do not bite or transmit diseases to humans but serve as an indicator of high humidity levels within a home.
